About Me & The Blog

Hi! I'm going vegan and I wanted a place to share my experiences as I have them. Mostly, this blog will be food-centred but there might be the odd anecdote about what my best friend's dog did or something like that.

Answers to some "F"AQs (sometimes they're just me coming up with snarky replies!)

Why are you going vegan?
Environmental reasons, primarily. A few weeks ago, I was at a meeting and gave a really passionate speech about the environment and as I was speaking, I realised that I wanted to do more. Fast forward to yesterday (27.5.19) and I decided I was going vegan.

Meat is vital, isn't it?
Extra points if it comes from somebody who isn't a dietitian/nutritionist. No, I was veggie for 3.5 years and I didn't die, because I'm still here. What makes you think going vegan will be that different?

How do you do Christmas?
I haven't officially gone vegan yet.
Let's cross that bridge when we get there, OK? It's MAY, ask me again in November. Vegan cookies are a thing (Some brands of gingernuts are accidentally vegan, yay!) and I don't really like sweets, so that's OK. (They then ask about the roast, as if the meat is the only good part of Christmas dinner) I can eat all the vegetables and I can make my own gravy (my family host & they make chicken gravy) and the bread we get is vegan anyway. There are also lots of  vegan recipes that cover this aspect of veganism.

Where are you going to get your protein from?
I hate this one, I was always asked it when I was veggie. Breaking news: Mostly how I got it when I was veggie, just not eggs. Also nondairy plant milks, fortified soya products like tofu & mycoprotein like Quorn's vegan range.

Isn't soya, like, super bad for the environment or something?
Uggh. While soya does have more of an impact on the planet than other vegan options, it still has a lower impact compared to the lowest-impact nonvegan option.

What about Starbucks/Costa/other chain coffee shop of their choosing?
Mostly, this one is well meaning friends trying to meet up for coffee.
I can easily veganise almost all of the drinks I might want as these chains offer nondairy milk and I'm not particularly concerned by which nondairy I use. (And snacks?) Most chains have something I can eat and I'm not a big snacker.
